University of St. Thomas

University of St. Thomas (UST) is a Catholic University with a beautiful, neo-gothic style campus in St. Paul. Despite the school’s religious affiliation, the Catholic faith rarely shows itself in the school’s culture, though you are required to take a few theology classes. Their Business, Law, Marketing, and Engineering programs are very popular. The classes are on the smaller side, allowing students to get a lot of individual attention from their professors, who are highly attentive and invested in their students’ futures.

UST’s student body has a reputation for being on the wealthy side, but also being very friendly and down to earth. The party scene at UST mostly revolves around the numerous bars close to campus and in Downtown Minneapolis, which is only a hop, skip, and a jump away. For those who are underage, there are house parties to hop if you know the right people. The University itself also offers some events and activities for students on weekends.

Greek Life is not a huge part of campus culture. There are only two fraternities on campus, one being business-oriented and the other being a social fraternity. The social fraternity mostly participates in community service, but sometimes throws parties. UST students that love Greek Life typically invade UM’s Greek row. Sports are not a big part of UST’s social life, though the students that do attend games adore the Tommies. Among other Division III schools, UST has a strong athletics program.

When to Search

Because UST does not provide enough housing for all students, many upperclassmen have to venture out into the surrounding area and get an apartment. Student-friendly apartments can also be a bit scarce, due to St. Paul’s strict ordinances on student housing. This means you should start your search far ahead of time if you want a place close to campus. Typically, students begin looking for places around November and securing their roommates for the next year. By the time April comes around, people are beginning to sign leases. By June, the apartment search has largely come to an end.
