University of Missouri-St. Louis

University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) is a public University located right in Northern St. Louis. It is considered the most affordable option among St. Louis’ Universities, though not at the expense of quality education. The school has many great academic programs, though their Criminology, Business, and Education degrees are the most renowned. Both the professors and academic advisors here are known for being extremely helpful, guiding students to make the most intelligent choices for their futures.

The nightlife here is not the center of campus life, but it is certainly present. Some houses off campus will throw small parties on the weekends. Students over 21 have the bars and clubs of St. Louis at their disposal. There is Greek Life here and they occasionally throw social events, but they certainly don’t dominate the campus community. Partying not your thing? No problem! There are always fun activities on campus to attend.

If you’re looking for a school that loves its sports, then UMSL might not be for you. People are certainly active and take advantage of the updated fitness facilities at the University, but varsity sport events are not overly popular here. The teams that garner the most praise and attention are basketball and soccer, which compete in Division II.

When to Search

Many people who attend UMSL choose to live off-campus because the cost of living is significantly cheaper than on-campus housing. Most begin putting out some feelers and looking around for places in October. February is peak apartment search season, when the most students are touring apartments, making difficult decisions, and securing a place. To have the best selection of places possible, it’s a good idea to begin your apartment search ASAP. This is especially true if you’re trying to snatch up an apartment in University City.
