A Local Perspective

Towson is an interesting community because it has never become incorporated as a township or city. Instead, the community remains independent, with a population of more than 55,000 people living in the area. The area has history that stretches back centuries, with the Susquehannock Indians being the first known inhabitants.

Despite existing as an incorporated area, Towson has still become home to one of the largest educational institutions in the entire state. Towson University has more than 20,000 students studying at it annually. In addition, another smaller school, Goucher College, is also found within the Towson borders.

Life in Towson

With Towson not being an incorporated city, the type of infrastructure needed to create a viable public transit system simply doesn't exist. Bus #8 will get you to the University and to the major parts of the city, but most of the residents get around in their cars, or even by foot. Because of the sprawling nature of the community, most find a car necessary.

Where to play

If you're looking for strictly food, Pennsylvania Avenue has some great options, including a number of sushi joints. If it's a beverage you're after, York Road is the place to go. All the bars in town are within walking distance of each other, and all seem equally popular with the student population.
