Crazy Manager, Evil Company--
When we first met Hope, the manager of Wilshire Wood apartments, she seemed a bit kooky, but friendly and harmless. Her friendliness quickly gave way to pushiness, bossiness, and even hostility. She would argue with us over the most trivial things, and overtly refuse to do her job.
When we moved in we were told cats were allowed for an additional fee. We asked Hope to get the forms to set this up and she said, I dont know how to do that. Okay, um, figure it out? She hemmed and hawed and kept stalling and making excuses, making me think she just didnt want us to have a cat. Eventually we called the management company directly to get the forms. Hope didnt seem to think we should be allowed to have a cat because it might cause problems for her, regardless of what the lease said. This is indicative of Hopes work ethic; she thinks its her building, and shes the boss of you.
One night we were cooking a pizza and the carbon monoxide alarm went off. Pretty scary. Hope came in and said, Dont worry! Ill change the battery! Okay, but it said carbon monoxide alert, not low battery. She didnt listen and a few minutes later the carbon monoxide alarm went off again. We were really concerned so we opened all the windows and shut off the oven. Carbon monoxide can make you pass out and die pretty quick, and isnt something to mess around with. Hope came back and said, Oh the alarm must be broken, I will get you a new one. I agreed that it could be a false alarm, but it could also mean there was CARBON MONOXIDE in the apartment. Thats what a carbon monoxide detector does, right? Detects carbon monoxide?
What happened next was the most surreal argument Ive ever had in my life. Hope became extremely combative and hostile, saying all sorts of nonsense like Carbon monoxide doesnt vent meaning it would still be present even with the windows open (of course it vents), and that she didnt smell anything, even though everyone knows carbon monoxide is an odorless gas. I just couldnt believe the property manager of a building would argue with a paying tenant over an obvious health and safety issue. It was just unreal.
When it was clear I wasnt getting through to her, I told her that despite her apathy, I was going to shut off the gas and get the apartment checked for carbon monoxide leaks. She argued with me over that too, saying over and over again, I dont want you to do that. I dont want you to do that. Lady, its not up to you. When we finally got her out the door, she called us on the phone and argued even more. I just couldnt believe a company could hire such a relentlessly incompetent person. We made the decision to move that night.
After all that, the Highland Management company refused to budge on the lease. In the past Ive had reasonable landlords who only asked me to pay if they were unable to find a new tenant when breaking a lease. But these people wanted DOUBLE their money, new tenant or no. Completely outrageous, especially considering we were being driven out by a nutty manager who would rather argue with tenants than do her job. They used the old excuse of company policy, even though this was clearly extenuating circumstances due to negligence over health and safety. Its just a rotten way to treat people.
In the end, the apartment wasnt terrible but it wasnt great either. The place was always miserably hot in the summer even with the AC on full blast. The windows are old and drafty, theres no washer/dryer or other modern amenities, and the constant freeway road noise sucks. You can find plenty of nicer apartments in this same area for the money; ones that have actual competent employees who give a damn and landlords who arent greedy jerks like Highland Management.
