A Local Perspective

Hattiesburg is rather charmingly named after the wife of the man who founded the town. The Mississippi city is both a college and a military town. Camp Shelby, a massive training facility for National Guard Troops, is only a short distance from Hattiesburg. It is also a college town, and you will find the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

The University of Southern Mississippi is a mid-sized university that enrolls roughly 15,000 students each year. Southern Miss has been around for over a hundred years now, and in addition to strong academics is also a strong athletic school. The teams are known as the Golden Eagles, and include illustrious alumni like legendary quarterback Brett Favre.
