I currently live at the La Paloma Apartments. I immediately regretted moving in. Crime rate is high. Auto theft is a huge problem. Management lacks being pro-active in fighting crime and currently does not have security, cameras, neighborhood watch etc.. For the cost of rent, it would seem as though courtesy patrol would be provided.
If you work out of town, good luck trying to get your rent in the door and on time. Not very accommodating to say the least. Rent is due on the 2nd of every month NOT the third. Covered parking is full. Monterra Apts are safe and have camers, staff hold monthly meetings with APD. I regret my decision. Think twice. Filing insurance claims over and over is frustrating. La Paloma has cost me more money that what it's worth. Good luck.

I lived in a 3 bedroom, 2nd floor apartment for 1 year (ending April 2017), and wanted to share the pros and cons of the apartment complex.
Pros -
The landscape is beautiful - green grass, lots of trees, well cared for grounds.
The water pressure and heat is above average, which makes for great showers.
The location - great shops nearby (Smiths, Walmart, Whole Foods, Einstein Bagels), the Academy is right across the street, which makes for a great jogging trail. Beautiful views of the mountain and valley.
The heating and cooling works well, but the bills can run high (my highest electric bill was $170 in the summer).
Cons -
The walls are SUPER THIN. I could clearly hear my downstairs neighbors talking, cussing, watching tv... it would wake up my 1 year-old up in the middle of the night. Also - know that if you can hear your neighbors, they can hear you, so you don't have really any expectation of privacy.
You hear when your neighbors flush the toilet, take a shower, or run the faucet. The plumbing is super, super loud.
The apartments interior is cheap. The carpets were dirty when I moved in, and coming up in places, exposing sharp metal that was dangerous. They put some spray on the counters in the kitchen and bathrooms to look like granite, but it scratches off easily, making it look cheap (because it is). The appliances are outdated.
There are 250 mailboxes for the tenants, and only 7 boxes for packages. Which means, the majority of the time, you will not have any packages left for you. The management does not hold packages for tenants, so anytime you have something shipped to you, you will have to drive to the post office on Candelaria and Eubank to retrieve your package.
The management and staff are, as many people have pointed out, not great to work with. I paid my rent online, early or on time, every single month. One month I got an eviction notice on the 4th, so I called the office and told them that I made my payment online. They said they could see that I logged in, but my payment hadn't processed. Their online system had a glitch. SO - they charged me $100 late fee, and I had to spend my lunch break getting a certified cashier's check THAT DAY, to avoid eviction. I had never once been late before, had clearly intended to pay my rent, but their system had a glitch, and the management was super crappy about it. I thought it was incredibly unprofessional and unfair.
Overall, I moved out when my lease was up, and wouldn't recommend this complex to any friends or family. These are touted as "luxury apartments", but they are little more than cheap apartments, made to look nice, in a good part of town. For $1,000+, you can find a better apartment, or a more spacious house in the same part of town, and not have to deal with thin walls or bad property managers.

Like all the other reviews, I really REALLY wanted to love it here. The staff were very nice at first and very accommodating but once we had moved in that changed. The security personnel were horrid. We had a friends car broken into one night and all they could say was "well parking next to a ditch isn't very smart." They once came to our apartment in the middle of the night and accused us of making noise though my fiance and i were sleeping and called us liars. When placing families, the staff were also not very smart about where to place them. They had placed a family of 6 above us, all with children under the age of 5 in a 3rd story apartment. Needless to say, our complaints went nowhere because "that's what kids do." We had kindly gone and talked to the neighbors before speaking to management and that made it worse, as the people above us purposely began to jump around, bang on walls, ect. All of this was reported to management and we had even requested to move to a different apartment but nothing was ever done about it.
I think what made the experience the worst was the manager, and I believe her name was Rhonda. She was extremely fake and rude. She offered no help and no solution to any problem that was brought to her attention and was extremely judgmental. I once went to speak with her and she refused to come out of the office and instead had one of the girls in the front pretty much run back and forth between us to relay messages until I got up myself and went to her office.
The place itself is in a very good part of town and has a beautiful landscape. However, I would never recommend this complex to anyone until they're under new management.

I currently live at the La Paloma Apartments. I immediately regretted moving there. Once I moved my furniture in, I immediately felt the walls close in. Square footage is over exaggerated!! I believe they include the balcony space when they advertise as a way to draw customers in. Pictures looked nice on the website but the reality of it is that the carpets are old and stained, after getting some good rain one evening, the roof began leaking, the floor in my apartment has soft spots and feels as though I'm going to fall through the floor. My unit is old and dingy and has several layers of paint, I can tell by the corners of the flooring. I suppose I could pay more rent for a "nicer"/"upgraded" unit. I guess I expected more space, cleaner carpeting and no leaks for rent at almost $1000.00/month.
Rent does not include Water/Sewage, Trash. Pet rent is 25.00, pet deposit $400.00 and covered parking is 20.00 a month. The parking situation is a nightmare because it is full and the spaces are for compact cars. Office staff is pretty slow on assigning parking spots. I'm still waiting to be called for covered parking and I've been there several months. My lease is about half way through.
Crime is everywhere and at La Paloma, there's a walking trail to Walmart where people who commit crimes will park while waiting for their "teammate" to finish robbing peoples cars/balcony's. It's the perfect hiding spot to park.
If you work out of town, good luck trying to get your rent in the door and on time. They do not have a drop box. Not very accommodating to say the least. You're better off somewhere else. Good luck in your search!

I have lived at La Paloma for almost 9 months and I really love it here. I was apprehensive about signing a lease at first because of the mixed reviews on here but I have to say a lot of these reviews just aren't true. It seems like maybe this place wasn't that nice in the past, but now it's a really nice place to live in my opinion. It is pricey but it's in an expensive area of town, and that's just what you have to pay if you want to live in a good area, have real AC instead of a swamp cooler, and a washer/dryer in your unit. Anyone who says this is a crappy, run down place have no idea what living in a crappy apartment is actually like. This place is great compared to so many other places in Albuquerque. Management has always been friendly and helpful for me. Most of our neighbors are quiet. The grounds are kept very clean. The gym is nice and well-kept, and so are the pools and playgrounds. Maintenance has always come to fix our problems pretty promptly. We opted for one of the "not upgraded" units so our appliances are a little dated but they work just fine. If you want one of the nicer, "upgraded" units you'll have to pay more per month. There are extra fees you'll have to pay if you want some of the amenities so make sure you read your lease all the way through before signing so you don't feel jilted like some of these other reviewers. Also ask to see the specific unit you'll be moving into so you know exactly what you're getting. Overall I really like it here and I'm glad I was skeptical of these bad reviews. I'll be signing another 12 month lease soon!

I lived here 4 years ago and the experience was excellent! Super convenient to all major and minor shopping. Safe neighborhood with many trails within walking and driving distance to exercise on and enjoy the weather and beautiful mountains. Gorgeous grounds and well taken care of all around. I found the staff to be very professional and took care of all our needs right away. My family and I are about to relocate back to NM and plan on making this our home again. I could not feel more content and look forward to living back in La Paloma! Keep up the good work and future renters don't be discouraged from the typical disgruntled complainers!

I really wanted to love this complex. The reviews are all correct. The staff is rude rude rude. Our car got broken into a few months ago when we told the staff about it they had nothing to say! They didn't over to call the cops, they didn't offer to see if the people they call security saw anything suspicious that night or if other cars were broken into as well, nothing. They said".....okay." They did suggest if we wanted to move our car into one of those paid spots but I mean really....an extra $20 a month to have my car parked in a spot that just has a roof isn't going to protect it from being broken into agian. We have also been fighting with our stupid neighbors who have 3 cars and a motorcycle and park the motorcycle in a car spot. This is annoying because it's usually one on of the front spots where a car can park and they leave the bike there for months. They use to park the bike in front of their car but not anymore. We complained but nothing. So when I parked next to the bike one day the owner complained I was too close and someone put a sticker on my window saying they will tow the car next time for not parking correctly. ARE YOU FING KIDDING ME! Please. I have no time for these people. We did sign our lease again for the simple fact that we don't feel like moving again because next year we will be moving out of state. The only good thing I can say about this place is the maintance guy's are so nice. They are the only ones I can appriciate at this place.

I lived here for a year 2015-2016 and I really enjoyed my experience. In my year, I had one maintence request, and they addressed it pretty quickly. I didn't see a model, I guess I was lucky and got to see the actual apartment I moved into. I felt safe with my kids and I. Management was really nice, especially Andrea and Stephanie. The only problem I had was once when I turned in rent late, they kind of looked at me as if I had committed murder, but after that there was never a problem. Moving out, I got my deposit back, and it wasn't a fight, just a little delayed, but that was policy.

Its always something with this place. After our first year here we decided to stay but move to a two bedroom. Ended up having to wait to move in because they're "Replacing the water heater with a new one". Woke up this morning to find our water heater broken and leaking into the apartment below us. After two hours of waiting on the maintenance guy, he informs us that this is the original water heater from when they built the building 20 years ago. Now we are without water for a few days as they wait for a replacement. Prices have only been going up since we moved in... cars broken into... maintenance requests taking forever to be completed to name a few issues. This place appears nice when they show you around but you'll quickly figure out that it's all a sham. Stephanie is the only truly plesant person to work with at the leasing office... Everyone else is incredibly fake. The surrounding area is great! I think that's why we have stayed here so long. I can tell you that we will definitely be leaving at the end of this lease. I highly suggest reading the bad reviews on here as they all provide some pretty useful information about La Paloma.

I have lived at La Paloma Apartments going on 3 years now, and I can honestly say I really enjoy living here. The staff here is very friendly/helpful and maintenance is prompt. I love taking my little dog for walks around as the grounds are well kept and very green. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking a new apartment, as this is a great place to live.

I moved in on 06/20/2014. I moved here because it was very close to my office and the general neighborhood surrounding the complex is very nice. First issue, our refrigerator made terribly loud motor noises. I called and Lambert (maintenance guy and simply the sweetest of all the crew!) came over and pulled the refrigerator out and discovered tons of hair behind it....really???? HAIR?? I was under the impression that this apartment was cleaned before we moved in, and that was just freaking nasty. Also, our dishwasher was not cleaning even CLEAN dishes. Lambert replaced something and cleaned it out because, guess what...it was FILTHY!!! When I asked why we were not getting any hot water, he explained that for me to have hot water in the washer or the dishwasher, I had to first run the faucet in the kitchen until it got hot, then to turn on the other appliances Freaking RIDICULOUS! Moving on....I must preface this next part with the fact that I VERY SPECIFICALLY told the apartment staff that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES were they EVER to enter our apartment without us there. I work literally 3 miles from the complex, and I would always be available to let them in.Three months into our lease I received a call from the complex. I was told that there was a very bad leak and they needed to get into my apartment. I left my office immediately and returned home. When I got there, I noticed that there were boot prints all over the carpet, and my bed had been placed on little foam pads, moved away from the wall, and other things just did not seem right. The maintenance manager Kerry then arrived. I asked him if someone had come into my apartment without my permission and he told me "no". My bedroom was awful. Water had leaked in causing my carpet to be soaked. I was about to have hip replacement surgery, I had severe chronic pain at that point and had only one way to sleep, in my bed. It seemed as if my situation had no concern for ANYONE! They proceeded to drag big carpet fans in and told me that I had to keep them on for 3 days. Who cares if I can't sleep, who cares that the carpet smells AWFUL now. But if you can believe it, things got worse. Later in the day, Kerry slipped and stated that he had to come in without me here because it was an emergency....all I know is that he lied to me. He freaking lied and came in without my permission. I find that very disrespectful and unprofessional.But...it gets worse...I had a total of 4 leaks in my bedroom area in the 12 months that I lived there. My carpet is full of tracks left by plums all over the property and it is very old! The walls are paper thin and about 4 months ago we got neighbors above us that carry rifles on their backs, have dogs that are regarded as "service" dogs, but all they do is bark at every other living thing all day. The owners just let them poop in the gravel, so when I would leave in the morning to go to work the very first smell to hit me was dog shit, nearly every day. I told the management but they clearly did nothing to rectify the situation. Electrical outlets never worked (over 4 total), bathroom drawers never could be opened, AC leaked all over the carpet and needed to be serviced twice, groundskeepers just standing in one place for several minutes at a time, seemingly there to do nothing more than collect a paycheck and the great crew of Tumbleweed Landscaping using a leaf blower when the winds are gusting over 40mph.I can say that they management appears pleasant, for the most part .This place is indeed in a neighborhood that is pleasant, but if you're interested in moving there, please reconsider, it is way too jacked up, the money that we pay for rent should be used to better the complex, and it is clearly not being used for that!

I lived at La Paloma for 2 years. My motorcycle got stolen from my carport, I contacted the staff and they weren't able to help me at all. I think they go inside the apartment too many times for different reasons (to me they are all excuses to inspect the apartment). Once I move out, I felt they charged me for everything. I won't recommend this place to anybody, I think they are nicer apartments and cheaper in the NE heighs

Overall Rating: A-
About Me: Ive lived here for a little over 3 years without any serious issues.
Location: A+
- The location is the biggest sell for the complex. There is a Smiths, Walmart, Petsmart and several restaurants within a 5 minute walk from here. Additionally, the Albuquerque Academy across the street has a 5K loop around it which is heavily traveled by everyone from professional runners to moms with strollers. Its takes about 10 minutes to get to I-25 during rush hour and from there you can get just about any place quickly.
Amenities: B-
- La Paloma has all the standard amenities except for one. They no longer accept packages in the front office and the mailman rarely (if ever) uses the package postal boxes. The result is that every time you get a package (i.e. Amazon) that wont fit in your mailbox, it means a 20 minute round trip drive to the post office, UPS center or FedEx hub to pick it up.
Grounds/Maintenance: A+
- Kudos to the maintenance staff who keep the outdoors looking great. The common areas are well kept and the few times Ive seen graffiti around, it has been painted over within a few days.
- There are two volleyball courts, two pools and two hot tubs. There are also numerous little playgrounds and grills with a gazebo next to them.
- Maintenance is pretty good about fixing the important stuff right away (i.e. hot water heater). If its something minor like changing a furnace air filter, it may take a week depending on how busy they are.
Safety: A+
- This part of town is pretty safe and its rare to see a police car in the complex or broken car window glass lying on the ground. There is a 5K loop around Albuquerque Academy right across the street which my wife and I regularly walk at night without any worries. There is a police substation and a fire department a few blocks away as well.
Misc: n/a
- The complex backs up to the loading docks for Walmart, Smiths, etc. If you get an apartment on the end directly facing the docks, Ive heard the noise from early morning deliveries can be annoying.
- I dont know if the complex has a noise curfew or not, but every night at 9 the sprinklers come on which tends to clear people out of the common areas pretty quick and quiets things down.
- Plenty of parking
Move Out: A (Updated April 15)
- No issues with final walk-through; only charged carpet cleaning fee ($60)

This complex has lots of issues. From the perspective of a 42 year career craftsman in construction and property Maintenance I find the property maintenance to be criminally negligent. My wife has been wheel chair bound for a period of 37 years. As such she is unable to access certain areas and needs level areas in entrances and flat sidewalks. This was not the case and code violations were still not corrected when I moved my wife from the unit.
Management and maintenance staff are running in circles and none of the circles intersect evidently. Work orders are sometimes done and most times not done. If you have handicap or disability issues, these people will smile a fake smile and ignore your specific needs that are normally provided by other apartment complexes. When shopping for a new residence we were asked why we were moving and when we explained our reason for moving and the issues we encountered that were unresolved, without fail all of the managers I talked to said to file a lawsuit immediately for the code violations and the injury my wife sustained.
Security is poor. We had vehicles broke into, gasoline siphoned from our vehicle tanks, and my work tools were not safe in my vehicle on site.
Cockroaches are in abundance. They carpet the areas in the gravel landscaping at night and at times there are so many it appears the ground is moving in the faint light from the street light.
Washer malfunctioned a lot. Drains did not drain properly and there were many times when the residents above would flood our kitchen with sewage as the sewer drains were clogged in the area below us.
There are many many better places to live. Maintenance issues, mismanagement, deliberate willful misrepresentation, and a demand for money for services not rendered. Pass this place by. Look at others who are more interested in being real with tenants and take a proactive role in resolving maintenance issues. If you are in a wheel chair seek a home elsewhere. This management staff has not concept of access issues for wheel chair users and safety is not a priority in our experience.

First, I'll start by commenting on the positive attributes of this apartment complex, as it would be 100% inaccurate to completely run the place into the mud:
1) The location is excellent. You have a Sprouts Market, Smith's Grocery Store, Whole Foods, Albertson's, and Trader Joes all within 0.5 to 2 miles of the complex. Additionally, if you are a jogger, the Albuquerque Academy and its spectacular trail are within walking (or running) distance. Additionally, the surrounding neighborhoods are really quiet and nice.
2) Parking is never really an issue (at least in the quadrant of the complex I've lived in for the last year.
3) You will eventually leave (yes this is a positive).
There are many things to dislike about this apartment complex, so I'll run them down in no particular order:
1) Roaches, roaches, and more roaches. I may have seen a live roach on occasion but mostly I would see a carcass on a daily or every other day basis, especially when the weather was warm. I am by no means a filthy person, in fact I am probably OCD and clean as a whistle so there is no reason why I should have been seeing so many roaches (and their carcasses) in my unit. Management sent someone to spray on a monthly basis but the problem persisted - unacceptable for the price you pay at these apartments.
2) Price - While great for the area, there are far cheaper places within 1-2 miles from La Paloma. I was paying $745 a month for a one bedroom that was approximately 815 square feet. On top of your rent you have to pay a water/sewer bill and trash pick-up. Between the aforementioned additional costs you can tack an extra $30 on your rent not to mention you have to take care of gas and electric. So in essence I was paying nearly $840-850 a month. I didn't think that was too terribly bad (while not thinking it was good either) but when my lease was up they gave me two alternatives. Go month-to-month and pay a ton more monthly or sign a new lease and still pay more monthly. Not cool at all...
3) Service - I'll leave it at this...I put in a maintenance request for two leaky sinks (one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen) and it took nearly three months and 6 requests to get anything done. Unacceptable for what you pay at this complex
4) The complex was built in the late 70s or early 80s and once inside, the units show their age. Once again, for the price I think the average apartment renter could do better as far as aesthetics and newness of the units themselves.
5) If you shut off your tv, radio, etc. you can hear a good amount of noise coming from other units but this all really hinges on the quality of your neighbors.
6) Getting the deposit back isn't easy...don't put too much effort into it, they'll get you.
In a nutshell, this place is forgettable. If you need to be in the far northeast heights short term this place might work for you but if anything dealing with the issues are not worth the price.
2 stars out of 5 - 1 for location, 0.5 for parking, and 0.5 for the fact that you will eventually leave. Good luck all!
