Troy is the absolute picture of the perfect southern town. With only 18,000 people, it is big enough to have some of the amenities that smaller towns miss out on, but not so large as to lose any of the sense of closeness that marks most small towns. Troy is a college town, and Troy University hosts nearly 7,000 students every year. The weather in town is typically moderate all year, with snow being very rare. Occasionally, a hurricane has threatened the town, but the more common weather difficulties are extreme winds. Troy may be small, but the operations of a few big companies have kept the town citizens well employed for years now. In addition to the University, Lockheed Martin, Wal-Mart and Sikorsky Aircraft are all major employers in the area.

Staying in the Know

Life in Troy
Transportation
Troy doesn't have any public transportation in the form of set bus or transit routes. As a result, you'll either need to have a car, or rely on getting around by foot or by bike. The weather here is good enough that a bicycle can actually make a fairly reliable year-round vehicle, although occasionally the city sees a little snow in the winter.
Where to play
Troy is home to a recreation center that has fantastic facilities for a city of its size, including an indoor track, pools, basketball courts and more. There are also a handful of local bars that are worth visiting. Try The Brick if you prefer a sports bar atmosphere, or the Dirty Pearl if you want a more traditional southern bar with occasional live entertainment.
