Shadyside, Pittsburgh, PA

Shadyside Neighborhood Summary

Shadyside is one of the retail capitals of Pittsburgh. Walnut Street is the central shopping area, housing everything from small local treasures to international companies. For more eclectic shops — including vintage consignments, hip art galleries, and swanky restaurants — hop on over to Ellsworth Avenue. The district is also home to a fair number of excellent bars and restaurants. Be sure to grab a Bloody Mary on Sunday morning at Harris Grill, or a coffee and a scone (made in a partnership with Justin Steel of acclaimed restaurant Bar Marco) at Adda. It’s not all retail therapy, though: For the artistically inclined, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts offers classes, exhibitions, and screenings. Mellon Park is full of beautiful gothic gardens, water fountains, and public art installations. This neighborhood also contains three of the best schools in the city: Liberty School (a fine public school), Ellis Scholl (an all-girls private school), and Winchester-Thurston (a co-ed private school). In 2014, Niche rated it the #1 neighborhood in Pittsburgh for Millennials.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
