University of Pittsburgh and Oakland

Oakland Neighborhood Summary

In the shadow of the 45-story Cathedral of Learning — the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere — Oakland is the “Med, Tech, and Ed” center of Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, and parts of Carnegie Mellon call the neighborhood home, as does the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and much of the city’s booming tech sector. The Carnegie Complex, endowed by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie in the early 20th century, is a National Historic Landmark and contains several beloved Pittsburgh cultural institutions: The Carnegie Art Museum, The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The Carnegie Music Hall, and the main branch of The Carnegie Library.

Oakland is definitely a student-dominated area, but it’s also not a monolith and is large enough to contain dozens of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character and attitude. Readers of American fiction might recognize Oakland landmarks — like the beautiful Schenley Park — from Michael Chabon’s blockbuster novel The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, which is largely set in the neighborhood.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
