Morehead is a small college town in northeast Kentucky. Only about 6,900 people actually live in the quiet little city. Although it might seem a sleepy little town now, it wasn't always that way. At one point in time it was the main site of the Rowan County War, which was an intense three-way feud that seized the area for several years. There is a small technical college in the city, but by far the largest educational institution is Morehead State University. This school was founded in 1887 and enrolls 11,000 students. It is also a major employer in the area, with more than 1,400 people working there. The school has a significant athletic program and competes as the Morehead State Eagles in the Division I Ohio Valley Conference. Phil Simms, former New York Giants Quarterback is an alumnus of the program.
When to Search
Try to start looking for an apartment as early in the summer as possible. The earlier you start looking, the more apartments you should have to select from, as the largest number will probably become available for rent in April or May. The longer you wait, the more supply will likely dwindle.
Staying in the Know
Because Morehead is such a small town, you really need to pay attention to all of your interactions when you first get to town. Word travels fast in communities of this size, and if you do something to rub someone the wrong way, people will hear of it quickly. This could include potential landlords or employers, so just be aware that every person you meet could be important.
