Kutztown is a small town with right around 5,000 full time residents. Just outside of the town is Kutztown University. The University is the largest employer in the city, although there are also a large number of thriving smaller companies as well. The University actually far outstrips the town in terms of population. With a total of more than 10,000 students between undergraduate and graduate programs, the University has close to twice as many students as the town has citizens. For a small town, Kutztown does a great job of celebrating itself, and of providing a high quality of life to its residents. They take pride in their historic buildings, of which 2 are designated historic sites. There is also an annual Folk Festival held every summer that pays homage to the local food, culture and arts.
The tricky thing about Kutztown is that there are so many more students than there are people living in the town. However, most of the residents are homeowners, and most of the rental properties go to students. Therefore, you want to look for an apartment when the graduating students are on their way out of town, usually making May the best time to start the search.

Small-town landlords tend to be more interested in the person they're renting to than the numbers on the page. Making a good impression on the landlord and having great references will be very important for getting accommodations here. Make sure your references are easy to get a hold of, so that the landlords can speak to them easily.
Kutztown is easily small enough to walk around with ease. If you need to speed up your travel times through, there are shuttles that move around campus and the town site that are operated by the University. However, because the service is tied to the campus, shuttle service is only active on school days during the semester.
A few natural landmarks such as Crystal Cave are worth visiting during your time in Kutztown. Shorty's Bar and the K'Town Pub on West Main Street are both good places to go for a nice drink. If you're there during the summer, the local folk festival is the best local event, and not to be missed.
