Find a Jacksonville Apartment

When most people hear "Jacksonville" they think Florida, not Alabama. But Jacksonville Alabama is a thriving little community that is home to roughly 12,500 people. The town was named in honor of President Jackson, although it was originally called Drayton. The city enjoyed a small population boom in the early 2000s, as the population swelled from about 8500 in the year 2000 to a high of 12,548 in 2010.

Jacksonville State University and its 10,000 students are an important part of life in Jacksonville. In addition to academic excellence, athletics are also important at JSU. The sports teams from JSU are known as the Gamecocks. The football team competes in Division I FCS.

When to Search

Jacksonville has almost twice as many vacant apartments as the average U.S. city. The good news is that this means finding an apartment should be easy at any time of year. Give yourself about six weeks to look. That way, you should hit two cycles of apartments that have been put up for rent.

Staying in the Know

Remember that the first impression you give someone is often the most important one. Always dress neatly, show up on time, and above all else be polite and respectful when meeting with landlords. Remember that you're hoping to live in a property they own, or which a company they work for owns, and you need to convince them that you're the right person to live there.

Life in Jacksonville

Transportation

Jacksonville is small, and easy to navigate by foot. However, the bicycle is quickly becoming the preferred method of transportation here, as a bicycle advisory committee works with the city to make it even more bike friendly. There are busses called the "Gamecock Express" that shuttle people to Gamecock games, and even these have racks to help carry bicycles for those who want to pedal to the pickup points.

Where to play

Heading to Burgess-Snow field to take in a Gamecocks game is a great introduction to the people of Jacksonville. For cyclists who want to stretch their legs outside of the city, the Chief Ladiga Trail is a 32-mile route. Talladega Speedway, one of the biggest tourist draws to the area, is also popular with the locals. Struts is a college bar that is popular both during and after football games.
