A small city, Carrollton has about 25,000 people that call it their full time home. However, the University of West Georgia's presence in Carrollton means that the actual population on a daily basis is much higher. With more than 11,000 students attending in any given year, the city has all the trappings of a college town, where the students are one of the most important economic driving forces, and the college itself is one of the most important employers. Carrollton enjoys relatively mild weather given the part of the country it is located in. Most storms tend to be mild in nature, although there is a slight risk from hurricanes spawning in the southeast. Religion is also a driving force in town. With nearly 100 religious cities for a city of its size, it becomes clear how important religion is to the local culture.
Student renters are an important part of the real-estate economy in Carrolton. Many of them will give their notice in April or May as they move home for the summer, or move on to full time employment after graduation. That makes these months ideal times to hunt for your apartment in the city.
Carrolton landlords are used to doing business with students. However, if you're a student renter, don't take your application any less seriously than you would if you were working. Just as a working renter would need to show proof of income and employment, you should also be prepared to show evidence of your situation. A letter of enrolment and documentation showing any funding for school you have obtained will help convince landlords to rent to you.
Although there isn't much in the way of public transit in Carrolton, UWG operates a shuttle bus service that helps students navigate the city. Of particular help is the shuttle that visits the major apartment complexes in town to ferry students to the campus. Many people navigate Carrolton efficiently by bicycle as well.
If you can get out of the city, John Tanner State Park is only 6 miles away, and has a lovely lake and beach. You can also camp there if you enjoy sleeping outdoors. Adamson Square downtown is where to go for in town entertainment. Here, you can walk to restaurants and bars, or catch a live show on weekends.
