Find a Carbondale Apartment

Carbondale is a small city in the south of Illinois. Like countless other small cities in America, Carbondale's foundation was built on the railway business. However, while some railway towns have shrunk to shadows of their former selves, Carbondale remains a thriving little city of 25,000 people.

Carbondale has four distinct seasons, but the weather is mild, with winter average lows in the mid-twenties, and average summer highs in the high-eighties. The town is also home to Southern Illinois University. This is a state school that was founded in 1869. The school enrolls roughly 13,000 students every year.

When to Search

Carbondale isn't affected to any large degree by the patterns that sometimes make a certain time ideal for apartment hunters. Instead, more general principles apply. If you want more selection, then you should look in the summer. If you want less competition and potentially even lower prices, the winter is the better time to look.

Staying in the Know

Remember that an interview with a landlord should go both ways. That means that you need to ask them some questions as much as they need to question you. One important thing to ask is whether there is a caretaker on-site. Apartments that don't have a resident caretaker or manager are sometimes less-than-ideal, unless the landlord has made good other provisions to look after the place.

Life in Carbondale

Transportation

If you're driving in Carbondale, be careful when you try to park near the campus, as most of the spots require a permit. Carbondale is small enough that many people walk everywhere they need to go, but there are also busses operated by the University available during the school year. Non-students can also ride the Saluki express for a dollar.

Where to play

A lot of great recreation opportunities can be found on-campus, especially at SIU Saluki games. Evergreen Park is a well-tended local park worth visiting. As a college town, it should come as no surprise that the nightlife is excellent in Carbondale. Hanger 9 and PKs are good options for live music, and Gatsby's II offers a total college-bar experience.
