It is not worth living here at all. Its billed as being luxury, but it really isnt. All these high end finishes are installed with some pretty crappy workmanship (the floors have odd, 1 inch diameter bulges all over the place and have completely come up/buckled, theres paint from the walls on literally everything, the sink fixture in the bathroom was installed with the cold water being controlled by the hot water knob, my stove didnt work at all, etc.). Theres just no attention to detail. My apartment was trashed when I moved in, having obviously not been cleaned. There was a thick (and very visible) layer of dander and hair all over the floor from the previous tenant. I could feel it on my feet and my sister was so grossed out she started gagging. Finding trash under the bed and under the overhang of the cabinets in the kitchen only confirmed my suspicion. The apartments are small and the kitchen is practically unusable (theres next to no counter space and next to no storage space). The furniture has seen better days, as my mom sat on one of the stools and it completely fell apart (that left a great impression on the person who pays my rent). Its all cheap and old. You can pay extra for a nicer furniture package, but you really shouldnt have to. Theres some serious problems with the heating and cooling in this building. The wall air conditioning unit set up (which is quite honestly pretty sketchy) leaks so much air that its impossible to cool when its hot outside and heat when it gets to be cool in the Fall. The maintenance staff winterizes the AC unit, which helps for those Winter months. Unfortunately, the building is extremely hot all the time in the Winter. My thermostat is set to 65 (the lowest it goes), the temperature in the room reads about 80, and the heater still kicks on. I have to have the window open if I dont want to roast. The building amenities are also lacking for the price. The gym is okay, but only beneficial if you actually are going to use it. The pool is useless for the entire academic year. The laundry room is minuscule and my clothes often come out dirtier than when they went in. The study lounge is a table and a few chairs in the lobby. The coffee area is okay, but the machine goes out of order pretty frequently. Wheres the computer lounge, printers, games room, outdoor social areas, and actual study rooms that all other apartment buildings on South U have? Its okay to not have them all, but these are things students care about and there should be more for the price. UTowers is a great place to live if you hate sleep. The walls are paper thin (so you know when people are using the restroom, playing their musical instruments, playing video games, and having sex), theres a huge gap under the apartment door, all doors slam when closed unless someone holds onto it as it closes, South U is home to the AA party scene (and all the screaming that entails until about 2 in the morning), and the building is surrounded by construction sites (that start work at the crack of dawn and work till dusk every day except Sunday. While close to campus, this is the crappiest area you can live in AA. UTowers has probably the ugliest exterior of any building in AA. This building has a notorious reputation among the student body at UM and I wish someone would have told me before my dad picked out my apartment while I was in class. The story is that you come here, you hate it, and then move. Most people I know are moving out and those that resigned arent excited about it. Ive signed a different lease that overlaps with my current lease by four months, all so that I can pack up my things and run (while taking on the burden of both rents). I pay $1600 a month to live in a studio (that itself is pretty crazy). Even splitting the room is more expensive than the majority of housing options in AA. Im upgrading to a larger, nicer one bed with all the same utilities covered. Im still living alone, its in a better location, and the rent is a fraction of what it is here. Take your money elsewhere.
