Duquesne University

Duquesne University is a private Catholic University located in the South Side of Pittsburgh. Despite their religious affiliation, their Catholic roots rarely show in academic or school life. They have many prestigious programs, including Occupational Therapy, Pharmaceuticals, Health Sciences, Journalism, and Business. The classes are smaller, allowing you to bond with other students and get well acquainted with the professors in your department. Students here receive a lot of individual attention and advice regarding their particular career path.

Despite the higher tuition price, students at Duquesne are known for being welcoming and down-to-earth. You’re likely to find friends from all kinds of backgrounds and places. Sports are not a huge part of the social life at Duquesne, but many students do follow the football, basketball, and soccer teams.

There is Greek life here, though it’s a bit different than some other Universities. Sororities and Fraternities do not have access to more resources than other students and most of them are based on campus. However, there’s an unofficial Greek Row located in the South Side. This is where many off-campus parties take place. Some students hop on the bus to raid PITT parties in Oakland. If you’re not into house parties, you’re right next to all the attractions and nightlife that the rest of the South Side has to offer!

When to Search

Because Duquesne students are competing with students from several other universities for housing, the rush to find apartments can be a bit cutthroat. The general rule to follow: The earlier you start looking, the better. This is particularly true if you’re searching for a well-priced apartment in the South Side. The apartment search generally begins in December, when students will start gathering their roommates and deciding what they’re looking for in an apartment. Most students will begin touring apartments and considering signing leases by January. Come August, it can be extremely difficult to find a fairly priced apartment near the University, so think fast and act fast.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
