Downtown Houston Neighborhood Summary

Downtown Houston is the corporate heart of this business-driven city. In recent years, though, city planners have been attempting to make downtown more pedestrian- and renter-friendly by installing greenery and public art and investing in retail and dining. The results are immediately apparent to longtime Houstonians, for whom Downtown is looking less like a parking lot, and more like a neighborhood. Lofts in formerly industrial spaces offer high ceilings, huge windows, and a taste of this historic city’s old-school charm. And new businesses and restaurants — like Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Prohibition Supper Club and Bar, and the underground food stall collective Conservatory — are making this once-stuffy area a destination.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
