As one of only three cities in Iowa with a population of more than 100,000, you would think that the crime rate here would be one of the highest in the state. But this isn’t the case at all, or at least it isn’t anymore. Recently, the city has become significantly safer than it used to be, as there were 500 less crimes in 2009 than in 2002, and there only 2 murders that year. As for SAU, it’s located close to downtown (which has the highest crime rate in the city), but it’s far enough away to be considered a safe place to live with less crimes than other surrounding neighborhoods. Because it’s the largest city in the region, Davenport also has the most expensive renting prices. The average monthly cost for a two bedroom apartment is $822, and $700 for a one bedroom. If you look for a rental near the SAU campus, you will encounter apartments that meet these price tags, or could be even more expensive. For students on a smaller college budget, I would recommend looking further away from the downtown area in Davenport or its suburbs. Apartments won’t be as abundant, but they’ll be much cheaper if they’re not in downtown.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
