I've never been so poorly treated as a prospective renter before. I am a graduate student with a successful online retail side business. I disclosed this on the rental application and the housing manager agreed to show me an apartment. In the office the housing manager began to quiz me over my jobs, income, etc, and started yelling at me after I wouldn't "give him specifics" about how much I made. Please note that he was not simply raising his voice, but yelling. I seriously thought I must be on a candid camera show. After I reiterated the same income that I listed on my application, he said that he couldn't believe me unless I had proof. I suggested my taxes, although it seemed strange to me that he would need proof of my second income because I can easily afford the monthly rent with my stipend through the school. The housing manager told me that I was being "evasive." It's unclear to me how I could have been already more forthright, as the application I filled out asked an incredible number of personal questions. I was tempted to walk out just then, but I thought, I drove out here, I might as well see the place. Bad idea. After I toured the apartment, the housing manager wanted to know what I sell online. I was honest with him in that I do not share specifics with people aside from family because it is a niche product that sells well and I want to guard my monopoly. The housing manager then suggested that I sell something illegal online. The accusation was insulting to me and totally unprofessional. I did reach out to the owners of the property in the hope that this will never happen to anyone again. The owner sent me an email apologizing for the housing manager's behavior, which I appreciate.
