Bucktown Neighborhood Summary

Themed Bars and Family-Friendly Dining in Chicago’s Bucktown

If you’re looking for trendy, check out Bucktown. This nicely affordable community is just a smidge north of downtown. It’s outlined by the Chicago River-- turned green on St. Patrick’s Day--and I-94 (the Kennedy Expressway) goes straight through Bucktown. As you’ll find in most of the Chicago area, public transportation is ubiquitous, and there is abundant nightlife. Local grocery shoppers love places like Mariano’s, and unlike some other Chicago neighborhoods, there are at least three very nice public park areas. Chicago’s public transportation is epitomized by elevated rail or “The L,” and there is a trail called The Bloomindale that traverses almost three miles of an unused elevated train line. Renters love the area because of the great mix of charter and public schools.

Who Lives There

Bucktown is large with a population of over 200,000 crammed into just over three-square miles. The 65 and older set make up only 10 % of the total population while 32% of the residents are single. Only a bit less than 20% of Bucktown’s inhabitants are under 18, and 50% are between 18 and 39. If you want a big home, this is the place for you. A 2000 square foot home goes for close to $400,000, but the majority of area homes are older—most constructed before 1950. There are a wide range of rentals available up to $1500 or more.

Places of Interest

Foodies really enjoy Bucktown. If you’re one of them, try a burger from Floyd’s Pub or some of the famous BBQ pork steamed buns at the Bento Box. If you’re looking for a fancier menu, try the exemplary French bistro food at Le Bouchon. Finally, if fine dining is your thing, get a reservation at The Bristol. If wine is your passion, check out Red & White. Chicagoans love beer, and the Map Room is a Bucktown favorite with nearly 30 proprietary beers and over 100 bottled cervezas.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
