Chicago State University

The university’s campus is next to Chicago’s Burnside and Chatham neighborhoods, and there are a good amount of restaurants in both areas. The city is internationally known for its cuisine, and this extends to even its most southern neighborhoods, where Chicago State University is located. There are affordable, college-approved places like New China Express, Uncle Joe’s, Brother Tim’s, and Taurus Flavors. But there are more expensive places too if the occasion calls for it. Chicago State University is 13 miles south of the city’s downtown area, but fortunately the two areas are connected by public transportation. The subway’s red line can take students from the school’s campus to downtown in 45 minutes. It also opens up the possibility for students to live anywhere in between too, and they can easily take the train to class or to the city on the weekends. A car-less commute isn’t perfect (you still have to pay to ride and wait at the station for the train to arrive), but most students think it’s far more convenient and cheaper than commuting with a vehicle.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
