When students enroll at Kirkwood they get an Eagle Card, and with this ID they can ride Cedar Rapids’ buses for free. All they have to do is present the card when they board, and no far is necessary. This makes taking the bus every day an enticing option, but in order to do so you have to live within walking distance of a stop. Whether you want to plan your housing search around the city bus stops is a big decision you have to make, and it all depends on what your daily transportation plan is. But if you could ride the bus every day for free, why not? The northwestern corner of Cedar Rapids is the safest in the city, in areas like Linn Junction, New Buffalo, and Covington. Kirkwood is closer to central Cedar Rapids, where crime can be spotty sometimes. Staying close to campus might land you in a neighborhood that’s affordable but compromises on safety. The nice areas in north and southwestern Cedar Rapids are further, but the commute isn’t ludicrous. I-380 can easily connect you to some of those areas, and the drive might even just be a few minutes longer. I think it’s worth it for increased safety.
