Ordinarily, a small town like Bloomington wouldn’t have many apartments at all. However, because it’s a college town, locals know that students will want to rent an apartment off-campus. Consequently, there are dozens of listings in the area for cheap student housing. How cheap? There are three listings right now for four bedroom apartments that cost less than $400/month. In most places, you would only see this type of deal once every few years, let alone in three listings at once. Mostly all the rentals are under $500/month, which is perfect for a college budget. Depending on your roommate situation, you can shop for rentals ranging from one bedroom to four. If you’re looking to live off-campus at IWU, renting in Bloomington is an excellent option. Certain students find that having a car is absolutely necessary if you go to IWU, while others find it completely unnecessary. If you’re wondering whether you should buy a vehicle, or bring one from home, you need to take a few factors into consideration: are you living on-campus, or within walking distance? If so, a car isn’t necessary. There are extensive bus routes provided by Bloomington and student-run transportation at IWU (Titan Transport) that can take you wherever you need to go, and the campus is small and very walkable. However, if you live far from campus, such as in another town or city, you will need a car to commute to class. A car is also recommended if you plan on spending weekends outside of Bloomington (such as in Chicago or Indianapolis).

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
