Find a Baltimore Apartment

There are many reasons why Baltimore has gotten a rough reputation over the years. However, there are also many things that make it a vibrant, thriving city that its citizens are proud to call home. The city is the largest in the state, with more than 622,000 living there.

For the first time in many years, Baltimore started to grow again in 2013, albeit at a very slow rate. Prior to that, the city has been declining in population for many years. The swing back to growth has many optimistic that the city's struggles are being overcome, and that Baltimore may start to see a return to the prosperity of the past.

When to Search

Baltimore is a city with a lot of vacant property thanks to years of population decline. However, not all of those apartments are desirable. If you're looking for apartments when the most options will be on the market, shop between May and September. Hopefully, with more options available to you, you can find a place that suits your needs.

Staying in the Know

Despite all the efforts that have been made to improve the city, Baltimore still suffers from a very high crime rate. If you're new to the city, do your homework before getting an apartment. Check out the crime rate in the area before you move in, as there are some neighborhoods that are perfectly safe, and others which are quite undesirable.

Life in Baltimore

Transportation

The MTA light rail system in Baltimore is an excellent way to commute into the city center from the edge of the city. You can also use the Charm City Circulator to get around parts of the interior of the city for free. Once you're outside of the areas served by these transit routes, the spread-out nature of the greater Baltimore area makes a car essential.

Where to play

Baltimore is home to two professional sports team, the Ravens of the NFL and the Orioles of the MLB. There are several museums celebrating African American history in the area, including the Great Blacks in Wax Museum and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Black History. The Harbour is a great place to take in the sites and often catch some free music from outdoor performers.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
