Tufts University

The Tufts campus in Medford is just a few blocks from the Davis train station, which is the penultimate stop on Boston’s Red Line (on the subway). On the Red Line, both Harvard and MIT are just a few stops away, and downtown Boston is just five stops away, or about a 20 minute ride. You can also easily switch over to any of the city’s other subway or bus lines, which will give you access to anywhere in Boston or Cambridge. The transit service, MBTA, also runs buses closer to the Tufts campus, which you can ride to get around campus or if you live off-campus nearby in Medford or Somerville. Tufts also has a campus located near Chinatown in Boston; if you live near here you will have direct access to the Orange, Green, and Red lines on the subway. Tufts’ main campus is located in Medford and Somerville. Both these areas have significant student populations because of the schools in neighboring communities. Students who go to MIT, Harvard, or Lesley in Cambridge often look for housing in Somerville or Medford because it’s a bit cheaper. So you will see a lot of students your age walking around, but in contrast, you will also see a lot of families. The center of Boston and nearby neighborhoods aren’t ideal for families, so they move to communities on the outskirts, or suburbs. Somerville and Medford, along with Newton, Watertown, and Brighton, are a few examples. Medford especially has more families than other Boston areas, and it has some very affluent areas.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
