University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is a large public college located in NC’s famous Research Triangle. UNC boasts some prestigious programs in Business, Public Health, Journalism, Law, and Information and Library Sciences. The curriculum is so challenging that the school has earned the unofficial nickname “Ivy of the South.” Gen Eds and other basic courses tend to be quite large, but higher-level classes are much smaller, allowing students to receive more individual attention.

Greek Life thrives at UNC. About 12% of the student body is Greek and it is a quick and easy way to make friends. Don’t worry, there are lots of opportunities to raid Greek parties both on and off campus.

Students at UNC celebrate diversity and make friends easily. Perhaps part of the reason for this sense of camaraderie is the tremendous amount of school spirit students have. Sports are a big part of what brings everyone together, as UNC has one of the most storied basketball teams in the country. Football is also quite popular with students.

When to Search

Many UNC students are attracted to off-campus housing because of its affordability and convenience to Chapel Hill’s many amenities. The market is competitive, particularly for apartments within walking distance to campus. Signing a lease at least a year in advance is highly recommended. Most students start searching for apartments around November and secure their places around January. By the time June rolls around, most of the prime apartments close to campus are already taken.

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
