I've lived here for too long. It's been tolerable because for two of the three years I've been a resident I only stayed here a couple of nights a week. I'll be moving out entirely in a few months. The pictures above (not able to post on rentable.com, not pretty. Black mold, seeping bathroom floor, decrepit carpet, and, roaches.) depict the condition the apartment has been in pretty much since I moved in. They, Carolina Apartments, have been through and "inspected" the apartment numerous times but will not make any significant work (any work at all) on the mold or floor until the apartment is vacated. They do raise the rent every year though, currently this dingy 2 bed 1.5 bath is $1,150. Why am I writing a review now though? Because these jerks just towed my car! After three years of living in squalor and not complaining they towed my car because my resident parking sticker was out of date. Never mind that I had stickers for the previous two years. No warning "Please come to the office to get an up to date parking sticker". I just walked out to go to work and my car is gone. Further injury is the fact that the towing company they choose to use is located in Durham! There are plenty of towing companies in Chapel Hill and Carrboro that someone suffering this circumstance could at least reach by bus, but no, you have to get a ride 45 minutes away. The basic fee at this place, Unlimited Recovery LLC, is $150. That goes up to $200 if you can't make it by 5:00 and another $45 if it's the next day! It's insulting, it's a racket, they are slum lords! AVOID!

For one, they repeatedly tow cars of residents, they clear out and renovate apartments above and beside yours without notice and whenever you ask for a sound resolution to these issues they give an excuse- not even a promise to consider resolving your issues.
Carolina Apartments: it does not hurt to be courteous. We pay just as much as the surrounding apartments and deserve notices and your commitment to quality customer service.
Staff is friendly but know that the children do terrible things but want you to find out where they live cant see renewing my lease

Great location, prompt and responsive management company. Minimal bugs, wish they offered the same rates or comperable to all tenants and better grounds keeping.

2) If you're a UNC student (I'm also a UNC student) DO NOT LIVE HERE! The utility package seems like a pretty good deal but even though the utilities are included in the rent, this crappy complex and management company will fail to pay your utilities for MONTHS and your internet will continuously be turned off every month! Nevermind the fact that you pay your rent on time!!!

Lived here for 3 years. I admit that there was a slight roach problem throughout it all, but I think it's more so the fault of filthy tenants than the management. In my first year in a 3 bedroom, sewage burst for both restrooms, so not pretty. Moved into a 2 bedroom for the next 2 years-- much more pleasant experience. Maintenance moves rather swiftly and management is nice. Tracy and Diane are very pleasant people and have taken good care of me in the past. If not for the dramatic price hike, I'd definitely go back. As for the gym, although not 24 hours, they do inform you that you could use the Royal Park gym which actually is 24 hours and is owned by the same company(GSC). Overall, I enjoyed my stay.

Hello I'm here to help people, let me begin, me and my team investigate this area for 1year and let me tell you the truth, these apartments may look nice but there's a darker side to every bright story, there are gangs here and drug deals and drug users, there have been recent drug bust in this area and at night , the real truth comes out, I don't won't anybody to come here getting hurt , or worse, I have the edivce to shut the hole down , if they don't fix the problem, but till then you have been warned

To top it off they have a terrible service department and the biggest parking/towing scam I've ever seen! The office staff will flat out lie to your face and cares about nothing other than making money. I strongly recommend living anywhere but here! If there was negative stars I'd give a minus 2!!!!

Well this place is OK , I'm going to be honest , so here's the cons- no 24 hour fitness room they lied, no free internet unless you live in the office or pool and there is mold and bedbugs and sometime a lot of people hanging around the stairs and some unfriendly people, and lazy maintenance workers, OK now the pro- very close to UNC campus and they have washer and dryer and nice size bathroom , they do have a fitness room but not 24 hours like they said and the office people are cool and nice , close dumpster and it look beautiful outside and close to foodlion but other than that I give a 2 stars due to the mold and bedbugs but if they fix that I would be glad to change it to 5 stars

DO NOT LIVE HERE. IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN CARRBORO LIVE IN AUTUMN WOODS OR SUNSTONE APARTMENTS. AVOID CAROLINA APARTMENTS OR ANY GSC COMMUNITY SUCH AS FRANKLIN WOODS AND CHAPEL TOWER.
***All of their complexes are extremely old, poorly maintained and have rotting ceilings and walls. The showers have black mold and if you read all the other reviews, it's true, there are cockroaches EVERYWHERE. A couple of months ago, they reached an emergency state level of infestation of not only cockroaches but spiders, ants, centipedes and about every other bug you can think of. It was absolutely horrible.***
Not only are the apartments physically terrible but the staff is even worse. They only care about themselves. If something is broken in your apartment, service calls are either unavailable or take MONTHS to fix with it just eventually breaking down again in a few days. Diana and her boss are liars. THEY DO NOT COMPLY WITH EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY LAWS. They lie about rent prices, apartment availability, and anything to get them an extra dollar.
I just moved into a new apartment which is not part of the GSC communities around here and it is absolutely wonderful. Clean, friendly staff and overall just a great experience. Giving this advice to anyone who has fallen victim to Carolina Apartments scams and terrible apartments.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. IT IS NOT WORTH IT.
What a horrible experience. I had severe allergies from the mold, dust, and roaches in this place and the allergies are now gone since I moved out. And I had never been allergic to ANYTHING BEFORE THIS! Roaches were everywhere from day 1 and while maintenance would come spray occasionally it was a pain when they would tell you to take everything out of all the cabinets and then not even spray there.
The mold grew in the rooms and bathroom and some was straight up black mold but management wouldn't do anything about it unless you got a test to make sure it was black mold, and those can be very costly.
The halls outside the apartment constantly smelled and people would always smoke outside the patio so we couldn't leave our windows or door open for fresh air. The one and ONLY redeeming quality about this place was the neighborhood was fairly safe. I never felt unsafe there as it was mostly just families with lots of kids. I know they are renovating this year but don't be fooled! A facelift won't fix the mold and roach infestations.

Like everyone else, the roaches are horrible and I'm really not exaggerating. I'm super clean, put down my own traps and pesticides, had maintenance exterminate three different times and they were STILL everywhere.
The neighbors are loud and annoying. You're bound to get harassed by one of the hoards of middle school aged teenagers living here. I'm constantly harassed, yelled at by children, have them knocking on my windows, doors etc. I have water coming in under my carpets CONSTANTLY. Now for the pros, there are none. Living in hell is better than Carolina Apartments.

Carolina apartments are currently undergoing renovations in some of their units...and really it looks very nice. Yeah I know the outside of the complex (grounds and exterior of the buildings) aren't very appealing...I live here, I see it too, but the move towards updating the inside really does something for the progression of the community. The location here is also pretty great, especially if you are involved with UNC at all (teacher, student). Overall, not the nicest place I've lived, but affordable and close where I need to be.

From the outside, Carolina Apartments seems like your average apartment community. But it's actually a lot nicer than that. The interiors of the apartment are actually really nice and well maintained. There's a pool in the center of the complex but I have never used it. Depending on your luck, you may be stuck with less than ideal neighbors, but thankfully all my neighbors are extremely polite and keep the noise to a minimum, so I have not had any problems in that department. Carolina Apartments is also pet friendly, so I am able to have my dog with me.

We had to be evacuated because of a METH LAB a few buildings down one night. Everything about these apartments feels like a scam.Every thursday at 7am the entire apartment complex is woken up by the (incredibly rude) contractors they hire to mow the lawn. There are also days when the maintenance staff use the leaf-blower, which is also incredibly loud, and wakes everyone up. Maintenance staff also frequently enters your apartment for 'inspection' with no notice, and they spray for bugs constantly, because, did I forget to mention the COCKROACHES EVERYWHERE. The staff is not helpful. One woman is truly nasty, and off-putting. Her vagina is probably like Satans cave.They charge unnecessary fees, they will squeeze you for every dime they can. They will charge you for things they broke. The air conditioning units are so loud and inefficient power bills skyrocket, and the sheer noise of them makes it hard to sleep at night. These are terrible, terrible apartments.

I agree with everything everybody is saying especially the roaches are very bad
Bottom line: If you care enough about where you're looking to rent to check reviews, stay far far away from this place.
