I've seen a lot of bad reviews online about the previous property manager of this building who would force tenants to close their windows in the winter. Luckily, he doesn't work here now but this building is an oven/sauna/microwave because the heat you bring in from the heater NEVER LEAVES. If you don't open your windows or keep the heat off, you will go to sleep and wake up sweaty. Also, heat is one of the few utilities you won't pay for (other than hot water, yes HOT water, you have to pay for water). There are AC units but I live in a one-bedroom and the cool from the AC only stays in the living room and doesn't get to the other rooms.
The back door on the west end of the building has had a broken lock for MONTHS. It originally got fixed in October/November of 2019, but it is January of 2020 and there is no longer a lock in the door, just a gaping circle where it used to be. You can leave through that door, but you can't get in unless someone lets you in. I have texted the new property manager repeatedly but he has done NOTHING. I have to drag my groceries across the building. I can't imagine what the people not on the first floor have to deal with. The elevator was broken for god knows how long before I moved in and broken for several more weeks after I moved in. It is barely ADA compliant as it would be tough to fit a wheelchair in there.
The property manager and I are mostly on good terms but he is still annoying. When I was planning to move in, I came a couple of days early to make sure everything was done that we had agreed on in my lease (all rooms painted, carpets cleaned, appliances in working order, etc). The property manager was PAINTING THE BATHROOM and doing an awful job when I showed up. I painted the rest of the unit (without telling his boss) while he paid me under the table, far less than what I deserved with all of the prep work I had done.
The walls are paper thin so I go to sleep either listening to my neighbors have sex or blasting their TV at indescribable volumes at 2 am and I wake up to them yelling at each other. I have no privacy; I can hear when my neighbors are showering or flushing the toilet because of how loud the pipes are. It sounded like one of my neighbors was turning the water on and off for hours at a time in three-second intervals.
Lastly, repairmen come into my apartment a couple of weeks after I moved in with barely any notice. My property manager will text me a couple of days before they are supposed to show up and give me a vague idea of when they'll be here. Many times, they show up in the morning when I'm still sleeping and wake me up. There's no notice in my mailbox or on my door of when I'm supposed to expect them. I live alone and I am a college-age female; that stuff is terrifying. Two grown men I've never seen before tromping around without taking their shoes off in my apartment? I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Since I live alone, I asked for a couple spare keys. I made a few for my unit, but I was unable to get any more building keys. I emailed the co-property manager and her assistant over three times and got no response. I haven't heard from them since I sent in a lengthy damage report, transferred utilities and filed renter's insurance with them when I first moved in. I haven't even met the co-property manager and she doesn't respond to my texts, calls, or emails.
Point being, I only still live here because it's cheap and close to UWM. The convenience is great, but I try to spend my time with music on while I'm in my apartment or out of the building altogether.
