Hofstra University

A testament to the excellence of New York City’s public transportation system (which is arguably the best in the country) is that even though Hofstra is 30 miles away from Downtown, you can take a commuter rail train from Hempstead to Madison Square Garden. If you don’t have a car to get from Hofstra’s campus to Hempstead’s station, the school provides a shuttle back and forth (the Blue Beetle). This shuttle, along with local buses (provided by Nassau Inter-County Express) and taxis, make it easy to get around the local area without a car. Hofstra University’s apartment costs are inflated due to the school’s close proximity to the most expensive city in America. Students are thankful to be so close to New York on the weekends, but unfortunately, this makes searching for a cheap apartment rather difficult. It’s tough to find a rental for under $1000/month in the area. There are college-priced options in Hempstead, but if don’t snag these deals quick then you will pay for it, literally. The average monthly price for a two bedroom rental within ten miles of the college is $2153, and a one bedroom is only a few hundred dollars cheaper. I would recommend splitting your rental with a roommate or two, and remember that the closer you are to New York City the more expensive the rent will be.
