My decision to live here at The Beverly was based on 3 factors: value, our dogs, and location.
The Beverly is located right downtown, pretty much close to everything. Easy access to the nightlife, music venues (Stubbs is next door!), and anything else youd want to be near. The vibe here at The Beverly is chill. Everyone is nice, easy going, and there arent a lot of ritzy people hanging out here. However, the building does allow smoking, so if that bothers you, look elsewhere. The management staff here is also very friendly and will do their best to take care of things for you.
Heres where things get hairy
The complex is a block away from the homeless shelter, which is a MASSIVE problem and should NOT be overlooked, especially for females. The other reviewer mentioning safety is not exaggerating the problem. We were promised that the apartment is very secure, and that they have a security guard patrolling the property.
If safety is a concern, this is not the place for you. My girlfriend does not feel safe here, despite the bold promises the leasing staff handed out. We have never seen a security guard patrolling the building. Not once. Since living here, we have observed the following:
- A homeless man wandering around the (supposed to be locked) parking garage, high on something, aggressively harassing my girlfriend at 6AM.
- People having sex, littering, screaming, shooting up drugs, fighting, and plenty of other fun in the creek behind our apartment.
- Aggressive panhandlers just about every single time we leave our apartment
- Human waste left outside an exit door
This is an old building, and very little has been done to improve things. For example, the elevator closest to our apartment has literally been broken more than its worked. Its been down MONTHS. As I type this review, its broken again. Our movers charged us an extra $150 to move us in due to this. If you think its not a big deal to take the stairs, recognize that youre parking below the 1st floor, and carrying groceries up several flights of stairs when its 100 degrees isnt ideal. The icing on the cake is that the key fob in the stairwell is also failing, which means theres a good possibility youll get locked in there.
In every apartment Ive seen inside this building, the countertops were not properly sealed, leaving numerous stains and marks from previous residents, the floors scratched up, markings on the walls. Our cabinets continue to fall apart. Our fridge was defective from the day we moved in. Our dryer does not dry. Every drain was clogged with hair, and the apartment has bizarre wiring/ventilation issues. Half of our apartment stays warm, while the other is ice cold.
The rest of the building is in the same shape as our apartment, if not worse. Many areas of the building reek of garbage, including the hallways, parking garage, and even the elevators + stairwells.
For dog lovers It has a huge dog park! The only problem with the dog park is that its made of sharp little rocks. Our German Shepherd is a ball dog, and has cut his paws twice, to the point where weve had to take him to the vet. While most of the dogs here at the building are very sweet, there are a few aggressive dogs that are somehow still allowed in the dog park off leash.
Overall, Id highly recommend looking at some other downtown apartments before trying to save a few hundred bucks per month on rent. You can find much nicer buildings for around the same price point.
