The only thing First Property has going for it is price and location, nothing more. Unless you're desperate for a place to live, I wouldn't suggest using First Property, especially their cheaper locations. They just started mandatory carpet cleaning that you have to pay an "accepted" company to do and then give them the receipt as proof (nope, can't use your own carpet cleaner). Not that the cleaning does any good - the building I stayed in on Howard is very old with appliances and heating/cooling system from the 70s. Very inefficient and causes utilities to be high (I know because I had a free energy audit done on the unit that I sent to First Property as a reference, not that they'd fix anything anyway).
Even though companies are *supposed* to repaint units upon new occupancy, the paint is very old and comes off easily. Old appliances, carpet, etc. make the units look very nasty . They even tried to get us to replace something in the kitchen with our money (what?!). It's hard to do any cleaning because most things need a professional cleaning or just need to be replaced.
Parking is a nightmare and they didn't get parking passes out til semester 2 (not that they check the lots anyway). Bike rack is usually full.
The outside doors don't close all the way, so we had shrews constantly in the winter. When maintenance was called, all they did was set up a cheap mouse trap and sticky paper. We had to clean up blood and a dead animal off the KITCHEN floor. Disgusting.
When I moved in, there was a small hole in the wall for this super long wire. It went from my room through the other 2 rooms to connect the last room to the unit's cable. I don't know who did it, but it was horrible. The wire was in the way, wasn't long enough, and wouldn't let my closet door close so I had to take the door off. I also took the door off because there wasn't any closet light. Actually, lighting in the entire apartment was horrible. The lights had this thick glass over them so even though I bought very bright, energy efficient bulbs, the covers made the room dim still. I even cleaned out all the dead bugs first.
Management doesn't make itself available to residents all the time. Contacting First Property is difficult to impossible on weekends or after a certain time during the week.
The only good experience I had here was with one person from maintenance who went above and beyond to fix more than what was requested. The rest of my the time here, though, was far from enjoyable.
