Find a Wichita Apartment

The pride of being the largest city in the state of Kansas belongs to Wichita. The close to 387,000 people who live there actually make it the 49th largest city in the entire country. The city remains a major player in the manufacturing industry, with aircraft manufacturing being particularly important to the local economy.

Although some have a perception of Wichita being a blue-collar town, it is also a repository for culture. The city is home to numerous cultural festivals and events throughout the summer, including the very well attended Wichita River Festival. It is estimated that over 370,000 visitors attend this festival annually.

When to Search

Try to avoid shopping for an apartment in Wichita in the heart of the summer. The frenzy that surrounds the busy summer festival season can make looking for an apartment problematic. Instead, start looking in October or November to have a low stress relocation experience.

Staying in the Know

With a high vacancy rate like the one in Wichita, you get slightly more power as a prospective renter. Don't immediately feel like you need to settle for the first apartment that you find. Instead, make a wish-list of the features you'd like to see in an apartment. Take the suite that matches the most possible number of items on your list, rather than just snapping up anything that comes along.

Life in Wichita

Transportation

Wichita is definitely easiest to get around by car. There are many locations in the city that are off public transportation routes, and far enough away from central areas that they are essentially only reachable by car. If you are staying to the main areas of town, you may be able to make due with the city bus service.

Where to play

Attending the Wichita River Festival is a must, and you can find other great festivals that aren't to be missed throughout the year. If you want to take one of the best drives in the country, head up through the Flint Hills region. For high end shopping, head to Bradley Fair. Finally, if you're looking to grab a drink, the Old Town district is where you want to be.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
