Hudson Valley Community College

Many areas of Troy are quite safe. For example, Pleasantdale, Sycaway, Cropseyville, and Brunswick Center areas are all safe places to live. However, the 2nd Ave, Frear Park and central Troy areas have a high rate of crime. The high property and violent crime rate in the central area makes Troy look worse than it is. HVCC is located in one of the less safe areas of Troy, though it’s not as bad as the areas a few minutes up the street. On-campus crimes at HVCC are extremely rare, with no crimes besides the occasional handful of small burglaries each year. Troy is located on the Hudson River, which means there are many outdoor activities relating to it, specifically the striped bass Fishing Tournaments, waterfront Farmer’s Market, and the Rockin on the River concert series. The Troy Pig Out is a two-day BBQ cooking and eating competition with vendors and music. The annual Troy Turkey Trot is one of the largest road races in northern New York, and the Flag Day Parade is one of the largest in the nation. A few locations feature live music and shows, like the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. Troy is not quite bustling with special events, but does have a fair amount of annual festivities.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
