One large advantage UW Tacoma has over its Seattle sister campus is the local apartment prices. If you’re a Tacoma student you’re going to be paying hundreds less than the typical Seattle student. In fact, when comparing every apartment listing within ten miles of both their campuses, the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment near Tacoma was $640 less than a typical 2 bedroom in Seattle (Tacoma: $939/month average, Seattle: $1679/month average). Another benefit is that the cost of living in Tacoma is much less expensive than in Seattle, where inflated city prices can really hurt a student budget. UW Tacoma students can expect to find a rental that meets their requirements for less than $1000/month, but UW Seattle students aren’t usually as lucky. Tacoma has a great location on the coast of the Puget Sound and Commencement Bay. The harbors and waterways are beautiful in the spring, summer, and fall, and spots like Owen Beach, Titlow Beach, and the Waterfront are very popular with students. American Lake and Spanaway Lake are also hot spots for locals. The UW Tacoma campus is just a few steps away from Downtown and its great bars, Theater District, and waterfront area. If you’re up for a short drive, Seattle is just 30 miles to the north along Interstate 5.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
