Tacoma is a dangerous place. There’s no getting around it. It has one of the highest crime rates nationally. One in 15 become a victim or property or violent crime. The chance of having your car stolen is 1 in 93. There are at least 10 murders a year in Tacoma. The crime rate in Tacoma is more than double both the Washington state and national average. The Hilltop neighborhood area is known for its gang violence and drug scene. It has been slowly improving since the 80s and 90s when the Hilltop Crips were big, but you still don’t want to be there after dark. The good news is, the PLU campus is relatively safe, with emergency telephones located around campus, and the option for a walking escort 24/7. The most common crimes are minor burglaries, and liquor law violations. Tacoma has many, many popular bars, like 1022 South, Top of Tacoma, and Doyle’s Public House. The Encore Nightclub is a popular Vegas-style nightclub with DJs. Parkway Tavern has lots of college students, and is a very diverse crowd. There are a few places to play pool, like Malarkey’s, and many places to hear live music, like Metronome Coffee or Jazzbones. Puget Sound Pizza has the best pizza in town, if you don’t mind the karaoke. Overall, Tacoma is a bustling city.

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
