Technically speaking, Stony Brook is only a hamlet. The small town is home to just under 14,000 people. It sprung up around a mill which had been in existence for hundreds of years. As early as the 1870s, Stony Brook became a vacation destination where people could escape the crush of city life in NYC.

Stony Brook University is a major University located in Stony Brook. The University has a total enrolment of more than 24,000 students. Stony Brook is a very well regarded university, and one of only six institutions in the state to be part of the Association of American Universities. It also has a strong athletics program. The Seawolves are Division I NCAA competitors

When to Search

As in any town where the size of the university exceeds the regular population of the town, the school year is the best indicator of when to look for an apartment. June and July will be the best months, as this is when many apartments are left empty by the exodus of students. May is a good time to start looking though, as this is when many will have given notice that they are leaving their apartments.

Stony Brook is one of those small towns where making a good impression is everything. If you have a professor or an employer from the local area who can give you a reference, it will be very helpful. Some rental references are useful of course. However, good character references, especially from an academic or professional source, help establish a connection to the community.
