This place is just terrible. I understand that you get what you pay for, and this place was very inexpensive, which is why my husband and I moved there. On the plus side, you get lots of square footage. That's about the only good thing there is to say about it. Here's my list of problems:
1. The place is OLD and not well cared for. Our apartment was pretty much completely water damaged. All the non-carpeted flooring was warped from past flooding (so, kitchen and both bathrooms). There was also a pretty bad mold problem (it literally made me sick to live there as it exacerbated an allergy problem). Additionally, it's just pretty beat up. They sprayed a pretty shoddy paint on everything at some point. Maybe to cover up nicotine stains? It peels off easily and looks terrible.
2. The water in the WHOLE complex of 100+ units is linked together. This means that if something goes wrong, it gets messed up for everyone. If someone needs a faucet replaced, the whole complex goes without water for a half a day. They usually give notice of these water outages, but it is rare to get more than 24 hours notice. Usually they post something to your door at the end of the day on the day before the water will go out, so if you have a job, you won't know until about 12 hrs before. And, since the place is old, the water is broken abut once a week. So be ready to be without water with pretty high frequency.
3.There are pests. We personally had a really aggressive mouse infestation (we caught about 10 in traps before we got anything done about it). I also heard neighbors complain of roaches, though we didn't have a big problem with them in our unit.
4. Smoking is allowed in the units, so it smells terrible. The walls have a faint tinge of nicotine and the whole place smells like an old ashtray. Our neighbors smoked heavily and their smoke seeped in through the vents in our bathroom, so we always had that old bowling alley aroma in our apartment.
5. The staff in the management office is incompetent and unprofessional. They frequently leave their shifts early or take preposterously long lunch breaks (2+hours). It was often difficult to find them in the office when we needed to drop off rent because they would not be there during their posted hours. When reporting an issue, they are often curt and rude. They even text while they're talking to you. We found that reporting issued via phone was easier, though even that had its problems. When you call and leave a message, don't expect them to call you back (even if you ask them to and leave your name and number). If you are lucky enough to get a followup, you are likely to be treated to an earful of sullen-teenager attitude. The staff lied to me several times (about mostly silly things like their hours or whether or not they had sent me a notice of a package coming in for me) and gave me very little reason to trust them.
6. There are several mysterious fees that are tacked on to rent that are not well explained. Supposedly they are for "common area maintinance" though if you ask what this implies, they get really pissy with you. I was told that it would be an occasional fee, but it was every month that I was there (which was a year) and it increased every month.
7. There are a lot of questionable characters in the area. The cops are there weekly (if not more), and there are often people lurking at all hours of the day/night. I never felt safe outside without my dog/husband.
SO: the bottom line is that you shouldn't stay here, it's a shit hole that is poorly run by people with way too much attitude and no desire to help.
Though, I should say that the maintenance workers were always prompt, courteous, and did their job well. They were really great, so there's that.
