Subject: US Highway 50 West/I-80 North transition.
There is a design problem with the transition going from US 50 W to I-80 N and as a result it is inadequate and dangerous to negotiate. The problem with the design is, there is no direct lane that goes from US 50 W to I-80 N. What one has to do is cross over onto the Stockton Blvd on ramp designed for traffic entering I-80 N. It just so happens that this on ramp parallels US 50 for several hundred feet which allows cars to cross over from US 50 to get to I-80 N and cars on the on ramp, instead of going to I-80, to cross over to US 50. All of this takes place within a few hundred feet, which increases the risk of accidents because there is no merge zone for ether situation.
It is very unusual not to have a dedicated lane going from one major freeway to another major freeway. One can always count on at least one lane making this kind of transition and sometimes there are two dedicated lanes such as at US 50 and I-5 just down the road from this intersection, which doesnt have any, which is unbelievable.
Most people expect that when the signage indicates that by keeping to the right they will go directly onto I-80 N to Reno. But when they notice that the right lane continues to go straight on US 50 W there is only a few seconds to see if it is clear to cross over onto the Stockton Blvd on ramp that goes to I-80 N.
I believe this design flaw can be easily corrected without having to spend a lot of money. Make the right lane of US 50 W split so that one can continue straight or veer off to the right going directly onto I-80 N. Rather that just re-stripping, you should repave several hundred feet so that it is clear and consistent with how it is normally done. Also, put a sign at the beginning of the Stockton Blvd on ramp to say I-80 N only. Local traffic wanting to go west on US 50 can enter the freeway at 29th and N Streets, which will allow them to get to US 50.
I hope this feedback is helpful in promoting safety and statewide consistency to the freeway system.
Sincerely,
David Holtry
