Mobile, like most southern cities, is best navigated by car. However, the public transportation in the city is still quite good. If you're sticking mostly to the downtown area, the MODA trolley system is handy for making short hops around the city center. If you're going outside of that area, the Wave Transit System operates the Mobile public busses that cover the remainder of the city.
The Battleship Memorial Park allows you to tour both an authentic WW II Battleship and Submarine. Mobile considers itself the originator of Mardis Gras celebrations in the U.S., making it an event not to be missed. Seafood and BBQ are two local specialties, and a visit to Old Shell Road should provide plenty of opportunity to sample both.
