LSC students rent in Duluth, because really there’s no other choice. It’s the only place with a strong rental market within ten or fifteen miles of LSC. But this isn’t a gripe, of course, because it’s a great place for students to live. Right on Lake Superior, reasonable apartment costs, great access to LSC. What more could you ask for? Just make sure you don’t take Duluth for granted; some students wait until the last minute to find housing, and they end up without a place or forced to live somewhere they don’t like. Winters in Minnesota are colder than anywhere else in the country, save for Alaska and possibly Maine, and are especially miserable in Duluth. Because of its location right on Lake Superior, the city can get about a foot more snow than somewhere that’s more inland. And I could rant all day about the cold winds off the lake. I’ll just tell you this tidbit of information: the average low temps for December and January are in the single digits. Yes, you read that right. In January the average is 1 degree. And the high? Just 19 degrees. The summers on the lake are perfect, but you have to be able to brave harsh winters first.
