Samford University

Samford University is five miles out of Birmingham, and with no real way of getting there via public transportation, students have to drive if they want to get to the city. And, similarly, they have to drive if they want to commute from afar to campus. Interstate 65 runs through western Homewood, and is the route that most off-campus students take when they drive from home or their rental to class. Route 280, which runs to the east of campus, is also another popular road to take. Commuting is an important factor in finding a rental, and when you search for housing in this area you have to consider that there aren’t any real solid public transit options.

When to Search

The majority of rentals in the area are located in Birmingham, which is a few miles away from Samford. However, you should be able to find a healthy selection in suburban communities like Mountain Brook, Crestline, Forest Park, and of course, Homewood. There are a couple dozen rentals available right now in the area immediately surrounding campus, and I see quite a few that are reasonably priced. The average price for a three bedroom is around $1000, but there are listings that are as low as $800 or $900. Two bedrooms usually cost $800/month, and one bedrooms are around $675/month. The ideal situation is to find an apartment building that’s within walking distance of your classes while still paying these low prices.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
