Coppin State University

Coppin students have access to two subway stations that are within walking distance of the campus: Mondawmin Station and Penn North Station. There are also city buses that serve the campus and can take students to parts of Baltimore that the subway can’t. Many Coppin students take advantage of the public transportation as a form of commuting so they don’t have to drive or be handcuffed to only rentals that are within walking distance of their class buildings. Public transit allows you to live in any part of Baltimore--the outskirts or suburbs, even--and still be able to commute to class every day. Coppin State University’s campus is policed by a top-notch security team and is very safe. Once you leave campus, however, it’s an entirely different story. The university is located in a dangerous part of Baltimore, and nearby North Avenue, along with neighboring communities like Walbrook, have a terrible reputation. It’s generally not advised for students to walk around off-campus at night, especially not alone. Finding an off-campus rental forces you to make a tough decision: would you want to live in a safer neighborhood, even if it’s further from the school? Personally, I’d say it’s worth it.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
