Although there are signs posted touting San Portella is part of Tempe’s Crime-Free Multi Housing Program, management staff stated that they actually aren’t in compliance with that program that’s designed to reduce crime, drug, gang, and illegal activity. They’ll be removing the signs…. Eventually. I’m sure that it will be quicker than they fix the broken lights in the parking lot….. Maybe.
San Portella is great if you want to live next to an Airbnb. With new people coming in and out all the time, you never know who you’re going to meet! Management claims that they screen all residents, but they acknowledge that they do rent out units to corporations. These corporations turn around and list the properties on short term rental sites like VRBO, Expedia.com, Booking.com, WanderJaunt, and more. Ever wonder who is sharing your pool, using your fitness center, or knows the code to the access gates? Property Management says they screen for felonies and misdemeanors, but the corporations who manage these units make no such claim (https://www.wanderjaunt.com/terms-of-service, section 2.4; https://www.staydomio.com/terms, section 5A).
When the random short-term renters or whoever it was that was staying upstairs from us let their washer overflow, it caused a major leak in our apartment. Maintenance was quick to respond and apologized for the company renting out the apartment, even though it’s not maintenance’s fault. The property management team is courteous and quick to apologize, especially when we’re asking about who’s coming in and out of the property from one week to the next.
Units are undergoing renovations and they’re making improvements overall to the property, so that’s nice. I’m sure that they’ll get a lot more money from those Airbnb renters now.
