There is absolutely nothing the apartment management will do if your roommate breaks the lease or breaks the law.
My roommate leaves garbage piled up outside the apartment, and during the night the animals get into it and garbage spills out all over the walkway. Most of the time we have garbage in front of our door. She uses our dishes and leaves them soaked in grease for several days, refusing to clean up after herself. She makes as much noise as she wants and when I ask her politely at 3 am if she can please keep it down, she waits until I leave the room and calls me a f*cking b**h to her friends. She smokes both cigarettes and pot in the apartment. Her friend moved in and has a key to our apartment, she sleeps on the couch and racks up our utility bill.
Considering her age, I can let this go to an extent. My problem is with how the Wilson Property management has handled my complaints.
Anything they've done, such as send her letters, has done nothing to change these issues. This has been handled as if it is a dispute between roommates instead of what it really is, her flagrantly breaking the lease she has with Wilson Property. I was once called into the office and she was actually smirking when I got there, the man who was assisting the situation not once calling her out on these issues. Then the manager admitted that this girl has caused problems before that are on file.
One last thing. I went with one other roommate to complain (yet again) to the apartment manager. She acted really supportive and told us this would get taken care of. But since then nothing has changed. It was also a mighty big coincidence that after told the property manager in an email that I planned to call the police the next time I saw this roommate doing something illegal, the roommate was suddenly hiding all evidence.
I'm thinking about talking to an attorney at this point. The only thing I can do is warn people that they should look elsewhere for a place to live.
UPDATE 12/5/2013: The roommate has given other friends a copy of the keys to the apartment. I've now seen at least three different strangers letting themselves into the apartment when she is not home. There's also a grill on the back balcony, obviously a fire hazard, and she has left raw chicken to rot in the kitchen sink for days.
I reported this to the Attorney General's Office and will also file a complaint with the BBB. I'm totally speechless that I would even need to escalate things to this level.
