I am a transfer student. but have lived in Bloomington longer than 1 semester. There are a few things that you will have to deal with when coming to IU.
1. The offices of admissions, financial aid, etc. work really slow for transfers so don't expect your account to be up to date for some time.
2. Parking for students does not exist outside of stadium parking where you will be required to buy a parking pass, $69 a semester, in order to take a bus. The buses get packed and students do occasionally have to wait on another bus 15 - 20 minutes later. Terrible in the winter. Update: I really am sick of the hundreds of students to 1 bus ratio.
3. There are way too many online choices for teachers to teach from. Let me explain. There is Canvas for my Psychology class, Oncourse for my Public Health classes, etc. It will drive you nuts to have 4 different .com's to switch back and forth all semester.
Most of your teachers will be graduate students who are taking post graduate classes at IU. If you are looking to be taught by professors look somewhere else. I for one don't mind. Every teacher I have seems very competent in their fields.
There is a mix of students here as with any college. I have seen more students here that are not interested in going to college than in the community college I went to. I've heard this is a party school, but haven't experienced that side, nor do I care to.
All in all it's an okay school. I haven't been here long enough to compare their competency to other universities. Right now I would say it's a decent education.
Update: 2nd semester just finished. Grades were great (3.9), but my teachers were awful. Wrong due dates posted, cancelled classes, etc. I have never seen so many disorganized professors in my life. Both the student body and faculty are very liberal, so watch out conservatives they will lash out at you for opposing opinions. I know of other conservative students being belittled for their views, so much for free speech, but never the less I didn't mind too much. I am just frustrated that I didn't learn anything constructive this semester. They really need to implement oversight of professors. The semester is over and I still haven't received grades for many assignments in multiple classes. Go to another university if at all possible. The only great thing about IU is its location and campus. Beautiful campus. Academics? Not so much...You'll notice most reviews are about the beauty of the campus and not the teachers/academics. There is a reason for that.
