What does Twitter reveal about the home of the free?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Political topics are hot \u2014 especially on social media. <b>Citizens are sounding off on social media, and what they tweet contains<\/b> some of our country&#8217;s most controversial thoughts. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To find out where people were voicing support or angst for presidential candidates, we combed 772,000\u00a0tweets for hashtags related to controversial political issues and politically incorrect slurs. We also examined emotionally charged terms related to gun laws, the Black Lives Matter movement, women\u2019s rights, and climate change. Does your home state reflect your political beliefs? Delaware followed with 52. And Nevada, Virginia, and Alaska weren\u2019t far behind (with 51, 49, and 47 respectively).<\/p>\n<p>When we examined the actual terms used, we could pinpoint specific words per state. <strong>Louisiana tweeted out the \u201cR-word\u201d most often, but its residents weren&#8217;t alone; a slew of other states also used the most-tweeted slur.<\/strong> \u201cFat ass\u201d was most common in Texas, South Carolina, Hawaii, and New Mexico. \u201cSlut,\u201d which is typically directed at women, turned up the most often in Nebraska, Maine, Vermont, and Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>As far as racially charged slurs, Connecticut favored the \u201cN-word.\u201d \u201cCracker\u201d found a home in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Alabama. <strong>An outlier also had representation with the \u201cF-word\u201d (homophobic slur)\u00a0in South Dakota.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>THE NEVER-NEVER TWEETS<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7720\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-11.png\" alt=\"Never Never\" width=\"800\" height=\"1154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-11.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-11-355x512.png 355w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-11-768x1108.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-11-710x1024.png 710w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-11-300x433.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to our collected data, <b>#NeverTrump was mentioned in a greater volume of tweets than #NeverHillary \u2014 but not necessarily as a favorite.<\/b> Per 100,000 residents, there were almost 68 tweets for #NeverTrump in Maine, followed by New Jersey (53 tweets), New York (46 tweets) and Nevada (45 tweets).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Swing-state Iowa led in postings for #NeverHillary, with about 31 tweets per 100,000 residents. But even her top-tweeting state was no match for the anti-Trump noise; the volume of tweets related to the leading locations against each candidate revealed more than a 74% difference. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maine\u2019s social media users seemed to be a little unhappy with both the Republican and Democratic political candidates. <b>Mainers made the top five for both<\/b>, but again, their voices were much louder when it came to trashing Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>TWEETING SUPPORT FOR CANDIDATES<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7721\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-21.png\" alt=\"Tweeting Support for Candidates\" width=\"800\" height=\"1282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-21.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-21-320x512.png 320w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-21-768x1231.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-21-639x1024.png 639w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-21-300x481.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We also analyzed which candidates received the most Twitter love in each state by gathering tweets with the hashtags #TrumpTrain and #ImWithHer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Clinton had a greater volume of tweets sent her way. The swing state of <b>Colorado had the largest number of postings for her support, with about 84 #ImWithHer tweets per 100,000 residents.<\/b> Vermont followed with 75 tweets per 100,000 residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>There were far fewer Twitter postings containing #TrumpTrain, but the top states to use the hashtag were Mississippi (12 tweets), Michigan (11 tweets), New Hampshire (10 tweets), and New York (10 tweets).<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">TWEET HEAT<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7722\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-31.png\" alt=\"Twitter Teardowns\" width=\"800\" height=\"1276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-31.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-31-321x512.png 321w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-31-768x1225.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-31-642x1024.png 642w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-31-300x479.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Which candidate got the most heat from Twitter users? The hashtag #CrookedHillary had a larger volume of postings than #DumpTrump, but does that fall in line with state voting tendencies?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Alaska had the most #DumpTrump tweets \u2014 about nine per 100,000 residents.<\/b> However, the state leaned Republican in the last presidential election, with the highest number of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/electoral-college\/\"><span class=\"s2\">state\u2019s voters<\/span><\/a> pulling for Mitt Romney. New York (six tweets) and New Hampshire (five tweets) followed Alaska with the most Twitter teardowns of Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#CrookedHillary was used most often in Iowa, with about 27 tweets per 100,000 residents. This swing state has six electoral votes up for grabs, and though <\/b><b> a five-point lead for Trump, the state leaned toward Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">WHICH LIVES MATTER ON TWITTER<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7723\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-41.png\" alt=\"Which Lives Matter?\" width=\"800\" height=\"1769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-41.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-41-232x512.png 232w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-41-768x1698.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-41-463x1024.png 463w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-41-300x663.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The  three years later, promoting protests and gaining more supporters through social media and public events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most recently, the movement criticized racial relations with law enforcement and local government, especially following recent fatal shootings by police officers in Oklahoma and North Carolina. As social media continues to act as a soapbox for citizens, presidential candidates are being forced to address these modern movements and social issues with their voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The #BlackLivesMatter hashtag surfaced most frequently in New York (20 tweets per 100,000 residents), Georgia (19 tweets), and Louisiana (19 tweets)<\/b>. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/factfinder.census.gov\/faces\/nav\/jsf\/pages\/community_facts.xhtml\"><span class=\"s2\">2010 U.S. Census<\/span><\/a>, these states have some of the highest black populations in the country: By population, Georgia and New York rank #1 and #2, and Louisiana has the second-highest percentage of the population identifying as African American. \u00a0Although Mississippi had the highest such percentage of any state (37%), there were only about five #BlackLivesMatter tweets per 100,000 residents there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Eventually, #AllLivesMatter surfaced on social media in response to the Black Lives Matter movement&#8230; <b>Hawaii\u2019s social media users used this hashtag the most, with about seven tweets per 100,000 residents<\/b>, followed by Georgia (five tweets), Texas (four tweets), New York (four tweets), and Louisiana (three tweets).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With the top state posting 20 tweets per 100,000 residents, #BlackLivesMatter had the largest volume of tweets compared to #AllLivesMatter (top state posting about seven tweets per 100,000 residents). And <b>#WhiteLivesMatter had fewer than 0.6 tweets per 100,000 residents in its top-posting state of Louisiana.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">TWEETS ON DIVISIVE ISSUES<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7724\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-5.png\" alt=\"Divisive issues\" width=\"800\" height=\"1798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-5.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-5-228x512.png 228w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-5-768x1726.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-5-456x1024.png 456w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-5-300x674.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Other politically-related topics we found trending on Twitter were #ClimateChange, #WomensRights, and #WhitePrivilege<\/b>. However, each of these hashtags received significantly fewer tweets than candidate-specific or Black Lives Matter hashtags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There were about six #ClimateChange tweets per 100,000 residents in Maine, about three #WomensRights tweets in Kansas, and about one #WhitePrivilege tweet in Vermont. Still, these social issues remain relevant, especially as we prepare to elect a new U.S. president who will appoint justices to the Supreme Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">FIRING OFF TWEETS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7725\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-61.png\" alt=\"Divisive Issues\" width=\"800\" height=\"1336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-61.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-61-307x512.png 307w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-61-768x1283.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-61-613x1024.png 613w, https:\/\/blog-assets.rentable.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/11220020\/asset-61-300x501.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gun legislation was also at the forefront of the conversation on Twitter, following recent terrorist acts and public shootings throughout the country and around the world. As these incidents have become more frequent over the past few years, presidential candidates seem to be under mounting pressure to address the Second Amendment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the data, <b>there was a greater volume of tweets containing hashtags related to gun control advocates \u2014 New Yorkers posted the most<\/b>, with about 13 tweets per 100,000 residents. In comparison, Georgia posted the most pro-gun hashtags, with about five tweets per 100,000 residents. However, some of the discrepancy could have been caused by pro-Second Amendment sentiments expressed alongside the #GunControl hashtag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although Twitter showed more tweets related to gun control advocates, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2014\/12\/10\/growing-public-support-for-gun-rights\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a> reported that the number of gun rights advocates has increased over the past four years since the Newtown school shootings, and that about 57% of Americans said guns do more to protect people rather than endanger them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">CONCLUSION<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Twitter has offered a platform for citizen activism and advocacy, especially when it comes to political issues and the recent presidential election.
